Georgia Scherman Projects is pleased to present Korean-born artist Hyang Cho’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. In this exhibition, entitled Being, Thing, Something, Cho explores questions about being, space and time. The works highlight an obsessive need to “dissect, reassemble, and reorganize” forms of communication and meaning.

For the exhibition’s keystone, The Rest Is Silence, Cho read aloud and recorded in its entirety, while simultaneously writing out overtop, The Chief Works of Benedict de Spinoza, Vol. 1-2. Here, continuing her independent and interdependent language and book-based practice, the work consists of more than 190 ninety-minute cassette tapes, the book with its graphite intervention, and a tape player - playing a single tape at a time.

And so on to infinity, an empty hourglass ~ embodies broader questions about being and time. 

Two other sculptural works, Line by Line I and Line by Line II, feature rigorous, repetitive line drawings. The first is a stack of letter-sized paper, front and back, accompanied by a sketchbook that embodies the trace of the drawing.  The second is an approximately 164 foot long roll of fax paper.  The work exists as Cho’s attempt to fill empty space and vacuous time; drawings front-and-back on letter-sized paper become continuous planes, and are stacked to fill three-dimensional space.

In a final component, my name is not hyang cho, hand written name cards reading “my name is not hyang cho” are presented to be take away like business cards. The work exists as a response to the language barrier she experiences as a Korean immigrant. Cho’s name cannot be properly translated into English. Through this statement she both denies and reclaims her name, hyang cho.

Hyang Cho was born in Seoul, Korea in 1974 and currently lives and works in Guelph, Ontario. She holds a B.A. from Sogang University, Seoul, Korea (1998), a B.F.A. from Alberta College of Art and Design, AB (2007) and an M.F.A. from the University of Guelph, ON (2009). Two recent solo exhibitions include: Permutations, Truck Contemporary Art Gallery, Calgary, AB (2011); and, That’s How It Is, Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, Guelph, ON (2009). Two recent group exhibitions include: The Black and the White: An Allegory of Colour, 5th KWAG Biennial, curated by Robert Enright, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo, ON (2011); and, Autofunction, curated by Derek Sullivan and Shane Krepakevich, G Gallery, Toronto, ON (2011).
