Dark Triangle is an art group founded by Ulysses Castellanos, Matt Crookshank and Zorica Vasic in Oaxaca, Mexico. They are developing their multidisciplinary practice in a decrepit abandoned house where they have studio squatted for the last year and a half. The large drawings in this exhibition are developed through a process of simultaneous action by all three artists. The work evinces an overallness reminiscent of post war abstraction in an indexical maelstrom, drawing inspiration from a "devil may care" approach akin to Martin Kippenberger, Binky Palermo and lower east side artists like Futura 2000 and Kenny Scharf. The interaction between the three principals creates a triangular field of influence that results in the negation of the singular ego and the disintegration of personal historical context and individual aesthetic judgement. The work is perpetually negotiated within this deauthorized field, celebrating an intuitive, spontaneous and experimental approach. Each piece achieves its final dynamic equilibrium when the protagonists reach creative exhaustion; a triangular check mate.
