Summer party & opening reception: Thursday July 24th, 6-8pm
July 23 - August 16, 2014
Georgia Scherman Projects is proud to present Jennifer Carvalho’s first solo exhibition with the gallery entitled Seeing in.
The overlooked and the seemingly uneventful places of lived experience are of critical interest to Carvalho in her work as a painter. Through a variety of marks, differing methods of paint application, and a uniformly engaged attentiveness, she aims to extend the viewing experience by drawing a viewer to the surface of the painting. Carvalho’s approach invests these places with care as she interprets and articulate the specificity of each unique texture and form. Drawn to moments of time that are full of ambiguity, her works attempt to form an ontological understanding of a place.
Carvalho holds an MFA from the University of Guelph and a BA (Honours) from McMaster University. She has exhibited nationally ncluding a recent solo show at Boarding House Gallery (Guelph, ON) and group shows at The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON); Olga Korper Gallery (Toronto, ON); Art Gallery of Calgary (Calgary, AB); and McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton, ON). She is a two time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award and was awarded a SSHRC Joseph Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship. In 2013 and 2014 Carvalho was shortlisted for the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. She currently lives and works in Toronto, ON.
